Children are a gift from God. Most of my life has been spent surrounded by them. I can’t imagine how dull it would be without the laughter, love, and surprises that they offer each and everyday. In this segment I will offer websites and ideas that I’ve found helpful in keeping kids educated, fed and entertained and also some reminiscent links to a time when wholesomeness was just the norm and you didn’t have to search for it.
I have taught Sunday School for the past 20 plus years and am always on the lookout for ways to bring them closer to our Lord and savior. I have also been involved in the 4-H program for over 20 years and feel this is an excellent program that offers a well rounded foundation for any child; rural or urban.

The Nifty Fifties
My childhood wasn’t perfect. But fear, (except for the daily “This Is a Test,This Is Only a Test” which scared the living daylights out of me), violence (except for the Three Stooges) and sex (except for the June Taylor Dancers on the Jackie Gleason Show) was pretty much non existent.
My early adult life was filled with confusion, resentment and rebellion and I was raised in a Christian home. I could have been a poster child for the Prodigal Son/Daughter. Today, I thank the Lord my folks followed the scripture “Train Up A Child In The Way He Should Go and When He Is Old He Will Not Depart From It.” Proverbs 22:6. I can never remember missing Church services, barring an emergency. If I had not had been taught to fear the Lord and watched the discipline of my parents in their spiritual lives, I can only imagine where I’d be today.
Today our youth are fed a steady diet of sex, violence and vulgarity, plus movies and commercials so terrifying I can’t imagine the scars they will leave on the little minds that view them. This fact, coupled with an overwhelming absence of any type of Christian values taught in the home, and the omission of God in our schools (thanks to Madalyn Murray O’Hare) moral decay in the United States is rampant.
Kids need guidance. They need some sides on their bridges. We wouldn’t let our children play a football, basketball,or baseball game without some coaching and the right uniforms and protective gear. We wouldn’t want to send them to their piano recital without practice; how embarrassing for them and us. Well, if we’re not teaching them God’s word while they’re young there’s a much larger consequence. If we are expecting the schools to teach them Bible stories, don’t hold your breath. The mention of the Lord has been taken out of our public schools along with a demoralizing portrayal of America. In fact today there are now more positive references to Muslims and Islam in many of your child’s social studies and history books than there are to Biblical characters, Textbooks within the public school system have been undergoing radical changes for several decades…right under our noses. I urge you to educate yourself on what is being taught to your children.

“Children Won’t Wait”
a great little book with an inspirational message
“There is a time to hold them close and tell them the sweetest story ever told; A time to show them God in earth and sky and flower; to teach them to wonder and reverence. There is a time to leave the dishes, to swing in the park, To run a race, to draw a picture, to catch a butterfly, to give them happy comradeship” …Children Won’t Wait

Anticipation…
“There is a time to anticipate the baby’s coming, a time to consult a doctor; A time to plan a diet and exercise, a time to gather a layette. There is a time to wonder at the ways of God, knowing that He guides our every step. There is a time to dream of what our children may become. A time to pray that God will teach us how to train the children that He gives. A time to prepare ourselves that we might nurture this new soul. But soon there comes the time for birth, For babies won’t wait”…”Children Won’t Wait” by Helen Young

Are All the Children In?
I think of times as the night draws nigh
Of an old house on the hill,
Of a yard all wide and blossom-starred
Where the children played at will,
And when the night at last came down,
Hushing the merry din,
Mother would look around and ask,
“Are all the children in?”
Tis many and many a year since then
And the old house on the hill,
No longer echoes to childish feet,
And the yard is still, so still,
But I see it all, as the shadows creep,
And though many the years have been,
Since then, I can hear my mother ask,
“Are all the children in?”
I wonder if when the shadows fall
On the last short, earthly day,
When we say good-bye to the world outside,
All tired with our childish play,
When we step foot into that Other Land
Where Mother so long has been,
Will we hear her ask, just as of old,
“Are all the children?”
